Adventure Consultants established the Sherpa Future Fund in response to the tragic events that occurred with the Khumbu Glacier Avalanche in 2014 and the Nepal Earthquake and subsequent Base Camp Avalanche in 2015. Adventure Consultants lost nine valued staff members in these events and the Sherpa Future Fund has been established to provide ongoing support in rebuilding the lives of their families left behind and providing education for their children.
Currently the fund is contributing to the education of 13 children and has committed to providing ongoing support until 2030, when the youngest child finishes school. We also gratefully received donations and supported our Sherpa staff who, due to the COVID-19 outbreak and resultant travel restrictions, were without work. Without the support provided these staff had no earnings or means to support themselves and it was heartening to be able to contribute at least something to them to get them through this period, so they were able to feed their families and be there when we are able to return to adventure with them again from 2022. We also provided grants to our Sherpa staff to rebuild their homes in the Khumbu region when these were damaged in the 2015 Nepal earthquake.

The AC Sherpa Future Fund directly assists Sherpas and their families who are experiencing hardship or who are affected by an accident from their work in the mountaineering industry. Adventure Consultants also contribute to this fund annually. The simplest way to make a donation is by using your credit card. At the conclusion of the pre-monsoon climbing season in Nepal we made arrangements to partake in an outside activity with all the Sherpa Future Fund children attending college in Kathmandu. We were collected from our Kathmandu hotel by mini-van, greeted by 11 very excited young children when we climbed aboard that we hadn’t seen for 6 months. Chhiring Sonam, Nepal Operations coordinator for Adventure Consultants was also on board, along with his son, Tashi, who was also very keen for the adventure.
Our mission for the day was to ride the Chandragiri cable car, that climbs to 2,551m above the city, so we could enjoy the range of exciting activities that are operated there. We were entertained by the kids boisterously singing songs (popular and traditional) in the back of the van as we drove across Kathmandu.
Riding the cable car was a new experience for many of the children as we rose above the city. The cable car enables access to the very popular Bhaleshor Mahadev Temple on top of the hill, a revered site to Lord Shiva for followers of the Hindu religion.
